Scrapbooks, 1925-1938 (11 vols.), documenting achievements of this civic improvement organization in improving health, recreation, and social welfare in the midlands of South Carolina during the 1920s and Great Depression; volumes document annual campaigns that raised money to deal with hunger and poverty, to assist unwed mothers, orphans, and the handicapped, as well as to provide "character building" organizations such as the Boy Scouts and the YWCA. Clippings, posters, correspondence, blueprints, brochures, and promotional materials documenting the work of this benevolent organization; in 1926, programs supported included the following Columbia organizations: the American Red Cross; Associated Charities and Ladies Benevolence Society; Association of the Blind; Boy Scouts of America - Columbia Council; Carlisle Courtenay Home [Carolina Children's Home orphanage]; Columbia Children's Clinic; Columbia Library Association [Richland County Public Library]; Door of Hope [home for single mothers]; the Salvation Army; Travelers Aid Society; and Young Women's Christian Association; collection also includes membership "master rolls" [undated, unbound]. Includes a study, published May 1949 (1 vol.), completed by Griffenhagen & Associates, The Greater Columbia Community Chest, Columbia, South Carolina : and related health, welfare, recreation and character building programs in the community (4 vols.), re conditions and facilities in Columbia, S.C., at hospitals and clinics, social support agencies, and at various destinations for indoor and outdoor sports and other leisure activities. Also includes arbitrator's report, 14 Nov. 1949, re a dispute between the Community Chest and the Council for Social Planning, and the Volunteer Office and Social Service Index.
